What to Pack for a European River Cruise (A Specialist's List)
River Cruise Packing Is Different
Forget everything you know about packing for an ocean cruise. There are no formal nights on river cruises — the dress code is smart casual throughout. You won't need a tuxedo or ball gown. What you will need is comfortable walking shoes (plural — at least two pairs), layers for unpredictable European weather, and a packable rain jacket that you can toss in a day bag.
The Essential Clothing List
For a 7-day European river cruise, I recommend: 3-4 pairs of comfortable pants or travel trousers, 5-6 tops that can be mixed and matched, 1-2 nicer outfits for the Captain's dinner (a dress or slacks with a blazer — nothing formal), a light sweater or cardigan for cool evenings, a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a dressier pair for evenings. Most ships offer laundry service, so you can pack lighter than you think.
The number one packing mistake I see with river cruise clients is over-packing formal wear. Smart casual means exactly that — you'll be comfortable in the same clothes you'd wear to a nice dinner at home. And please, invest in good walking shoes. You'll average 10,000 steps on excursion days.
Don't Forget These Often-Overlooked Items
A packable tote bag for excursion souvenirs. A universal adapter (European two-pin). A refillable water bottle. Sunscreen and sunglasses — you'll spend more time on the sundeck than you expect. A small first-aid kit with basics. Your prescription medications in their original containers. A lightweight scarf that doubles as a wrap for visiting churches.
What to Leave at Home
Leave the formal wear, the oversized suitcase, the full-size toiletries (ships provide quality products), and the 'just in case' outfits you'll never wear. River cruise cabins are comfortable but not enormous — a carry-on-sized bag and one checked suitcase per person is ideal.
